Ted Ackley

Ted Ackley was inducted by Larry Nowak

It all started in 1954, in Northern New Your State about two miles from Canada. Ted had recently married and was looking for a winter recreational activity. The choices were limited so he joined the company bowling league. He only averaged 143 that first year but he was hooked. The following season, the league needed a new Secretary and Ted volunteered. Now he was really hooked! This led to six years as Association Manager.

After 25 years of bowling and serving as League Secretary or League President in Maryland, Ted and his wife, Betty, retired to the Grand Strand in 1991. A week after they arrived, Ted was back on the lanes and the following Spring, he was elected Secretary of his league. A position he has held for 30 years. He was soon elected to the Association’s Board of Directors and subsequently served as Association Manager for 6 years. In 2009, Ted was inducted into the Grand Strand Bowling Hall of Fame in the Meritorious Service Category. Although, Ted’s high scores were 286 and 688, he has always admired outstanding bowlers. Over the years, he has successfully nominated 28 bowlers to the Grand Strand Hall of Fame including 21 in the Bowling Achievement Category.

Ted treasures the great friends he has made during his 68 years of bowling. They have deeply enriched his life.

Adrienne Aiken

Adrienne Aiken inducted by her mother and Hall of Fame member Debi Aiken

My name is Adrienne Elizabeth Aiken, and I would say that I was born to bowl. From the age of 3, I started lifting 8-pound milk jugs, comparing them to the weight of my first bowling ball. Now, at the age of 40, I have become even more in love with my game. I am very blessed to be able to have the talent and the support from my family and friends. I have achieved great things in this sport and
involved myself into one never ending goal. From having the best coaching, school, and family, I have become a 3rd generation hall of fame member. Always shoot for the stars, believe in yourself and team is number one. Now, let's go bowl!

Howard Glimpse

Howard became involved in the working end of bowling in 1975 as a coach with the youth.  His enjoyment with the youth activities, tournaments and awards programs drew attention from the adult board.  An invitation to visit the men’s board during a reformation meeting and he was “hooked”.  He was appointed to their Board in September, 1978.  Serving on various committees, his managerial talents were immediately recognized.  He was elected 1st Vice President in 1979, moving up to the President’s chair in 1980, holding that position until 1982.  Before work commitments took him out of state, he was instrumental in establishing the sun Fun Classic Tournament which enjoyed a ten year run in Myrtle Beach.

Following a one year hiatus, Howard returned to the Grand Strand and was re-appointed to the Board in May 1983, and immediately appointed to 2nd Vice President.  Howard then became active on the state level by attending meetings and jamborees.  In 1985 he was again elevated to the presidency of the local association, holding that position until 1990.

Howard was a working “hands on” president, actively participating in all functions of the association.  He graduated from a CLJW held in Myrtle Beach and became one of the first Certified Lane Inspector of this association.  He was very active in forming a bowling council and working with the YABA.  He was the creator of our YABA Scholarship Fund, providing a $1,000.00 grant each year to a deserving youth bowler.  In 1986 he attended his first LAOTC, a regional in Jacksonville, FL.  Howard was rewarded for his diligent efforts being honored as only the second in his association to receive the Director of the Year Award.  He was also honored to be one of the first two inductees into the Grand Strand Bowling Hall of Fame.

His leadership of the Grand Strand Bowling Association was instrumental in his association receiving the ABC Service Award in 1985, the Five Year Service Award in 1990, the Ten Year Service Award in 1995 and the coveted ABC President’s Award of Merit in 1996.  He was selected by his association to attend the ABC Conventions and accept two of these awards; the first and the Ten Year Award.

In 1986 his presence became more prevalent as he was elected Lower District Director of the SCSBA.  One of his first duties was assisting with the 1986 SCSBA Tournament, hosted by the Grand Strand.  To this date, that is the largest SCSBA Championship Tournament in number of teams (494).  For the 1993 Jamboree Howard initiated a raffle to bring a Bowling Ambassador to assist the SCSBA Hall of Fame presentations and ceremonies.  He worked many hours and aggressively promoted the State Seniors Tournament by the Grand Strand.  In 1989 Howard was elected 3rd Vice President of the SCSBA, moving up the ladder to the President’s chair in 1992.  For his contributions to the SCSBA he was elected Life Member in 1993.

Howard is a leader, deserving of membership in the SCSBA Hall of Fame.

Larry D. Meredith

Larry is a quite mannered bowler, who goes about his job with little or no fare.  He is very dedicated to the sport and devotes a large amount of time to the game.  Personality, Leadership and Dedication are those which reflect very highly on our sport.  He is a credit to the game of Bowling.

Larry’s bowling history began in 1959 while still in High School (Seneca, SC).  His first ball was a strike and first game was 101.  He has gotten a little better, bowling in two leagues with averages between 205 and 213.  His high series has been 761 and high game of 288.  Larry’s leadership experience began while being stationed in Etain, France with the U.S. Air Force.  He was a member of the Eastern France City Association in 1963-1967.  He was the Secretary/Treasurer of a Singles Scratch League with six (6) squads each week and made payoffs every week.  Larry was part time manager of a bowling center for a short time while in France.

Larry has been a member of the Greater Greenville Bowling Association since 1976.  He served as Director, Vice Presidents, President, and was selected to be a member of the Greater Greenville Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 1988 and is still devoting his time to the bowlers of Greenville.  He is a member of the SBA Board of Directors and an advisor to the “250” Masters Club in Augusta.

Larry loves the game of bowling and continues to devote most of his time to the game.  He worked for three years as a mechanic at AMF Greenville Bowl.  Larry was a member of the PBA for two years and was elected as “SCSBA” Tournament Manager.  (He gave up his membership in PBA to devote all of his time to both “SCSBA” Tournaments and to the bowlers of the State of South Carolina.

Bowling is a major part of Larry’s life.  Larry met his wife of 23 years, (Jane) at Star Lanes in Greenville.  Larry’s and Jane’s children, Carri and Adam were both recipients of the Greenville YABA Scholarship of $1,000 each.  It was a thrill for Larry in 1992 to attend the State/Provincial Leaders Training Program in Greendale, Wisconsin and make the tour of Bowling Headquarters.

Larry’s many accomplishments on the lanes, his fulfillment of the officer’s of Leagues, Local Association, and “SCSBA”, his compassion, dedication, and love of the game are very impressive.

I can think of two recent examples that illustrate his compassion and dedication to his fellow bowler.  One was when he called and invited me (Jim Lynn) to ride with him to Columbia for visitation with the family of a fellow bowler who had passed away.  Another wa when his employer required him to spend the week at a training seminar in Atlanta.  On Thursday evening he drove back to Greenville to bowl on our team, then drove back to Atlanta on Friday morning.

Larry has always conducted himself with dignity on and off the lanes.  He is a very good sport.  He always works tournaments, leagues, YABA and assists the Greenville Women’s Bowling Association and the South Carolina Women’s Bowling Association in working all the programs they have going.  He always does more than is expected of him.  Larry is exactly what you like to see in a South Carolina Hall of Fame member.  He is a tribute to our Sport and is well deserving of the honor.

A note from Larry

I would like to give thanks to my wife, Jane.  Without her love and understanding I would not have been able to give my time so freely to the bowlers of the State of South Carolina.  THANK YOU, and I love you very much.

Ellen was elected to the Columbia WBA Board of Directors soon after moving to Columbia.  She was very fortunate in having the endorsement and guidance of Laura Browne, Ruth Whitfield, Vera Harris, Janice Johnson and Barbara Payment, as she became more involved in the administrative aspect of bowling.
